100% Increase In Weight-Loss Surgeries in India

There is a 100% increase in people opting for bariatric surgeries in India. This is a big indicator of the rise in obesity and unhealthy lifestyles in India.

Bariatric or Weight-loss surgery is a surgery done to lose weight. Here a person’s is stapled and made small. This is done to reduce appetite, lose weight and prevent diseases.  Many people are opting for such surgeries in India. In 2004, there were only 200 people got the surgery. However in 2019, more than 20,000 people have received the surgery. The Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI) said that the number of specialist surgeons has also increased. In 2003, there were only 8 Bariatric Surgeons. Now there are more than 450. Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab,Gujarat and Tamil Naud has the most number of surgeries every year. This also shows that the number of people with Obesity is rapidly growing in India. People in their 30s-40s do the surgery. These days patients as old as 15 get the surgery. 

Dr. Arun Prasad the President of OSSI said that, people get weight-loss surgeries done because they are fed up with their heavy weight and lifestyle.He also said that most patients who opt for surgery have diabetes, snoring problem and joint pain. Dr. Prasad said that opting for surgeries to improve lifestyle is not the solution to being overweight. Eating healthy food and changing your habits will ensure a healthy life. India is still no match for the USA. Which has the highest number of overweight people. In 2018, 2.5 lakh people in the USA got this surgery done.
