IPL: KKR & CSK Players Test Positive For Covid-19

The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 3 has been rescheduled after two KKR players, Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, tested positive for Covid-19.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was scheduled to be played on 3rd May at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However the match was rescheduled as two KKR players - Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for Covid-19. All other team members have tested negative. The IPL released a statement saying, “Both the players have isolated themselves. The Medical Team is in continuous touch with them and are monitoring their health. The Kolkata Knight Riders have now started a daily testing routine to identify any other possible cases and treat them at the earliest.”

The Medical Team is also checking the contacts of the two positive cases during the 48 hours prior. After Warrier and Chakravarthy tested positive, the entire KKR camp went into immediate quarantine in their Ahmedabad hotel. Both the players and the support staff are set to stay in isolation for a period of seven days as per rules. Though the IPL and BCCI informed that the match between KKR and RCB has been postponed, a new date has not been announced as yet. Apart from this, it also came to light that Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan, bowling coach L Balaji and a lower rank staff member tested positive on 2nd May. They were tested again and got negative reports on 3rd May. A top BCCI source declared theirs as a case of "false positives". This is the first time that players of a team have tested positive for Covid-19 during the IPL 2021.

Earlier, RCB's Devdutt Padikkal and Delhi Capitals' Axar Patel had tested positive for Covid-19 but that was before they joined their respective teams. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings Captain KL Rahul was admitted to the hospital on 1st May 2021. He had severe abdomen pain. He was diagnosed with Appendix (1) and he will be undergoing surgery for the same.
