ICC Names Dhoni Captain of the ‘Team of the Decade’

The ICC announced the former Indian captain MS Dhoni as the captain for Men’s T20 Team of the Decade and ODI Team of the Decade and Virat Kohli as the captain of the test team of the decade.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Awards of the Decade is a one-off edition of the ICC Awards annual awards programme. It aims to celebrate the stand-out performers and moments from the past ten years of international cricket. This is the first time that ICC invited fans to vote for selecting the winners across categories. Fans voting was for 10 % and the panel voted for 90%. The voting panel considered players' performance between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2020. More than 1.5 million fans from across the globe participated, casting 5.3 million votes. For the  ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade, fans provided 100% of the vote for the from a list of the past winners since 2011.

ICC on 27th December announced the Men’s T20I, ODI, Test and Women’s T20 teams of the decade. Former India captain MS Dhoni was named as the captain for Men’s T20 and ODI teams. The T20I side consisted of four players from India, two from Australia, two West Indies and one each from Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Afghanistan. Apart from MS Dhoni, current Indian captain  Virat Kohli, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma are the other Indians in the T20I team. The ICC’s ODI team of the decade led by Dhoni includes star Indian batsmen Rohit and Virat.

The ICC also announced the Test team of the decade and named Virat Kohli as the skipper. The test team included Ravi Ashwin as well. In the women’s T20I team of the decade, India’s Harmanpreet Kaur and Poonam Yadav were selected. Virat Kohli, who had scored 20,396 runs in all international cricket during the time, which is more than anyone else, was also part of team India that won the ICC CWC 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013. He won the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade. Kohli was also awarded the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade. MS Dhoni won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade, chosen by fans for his gesture of calling back former England batter Ian Bell following a disputable runout at Trent Bridge in 2011.
