States Will Need UP Govt Permission to Hire Workers
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that any state government which wants to employ migrant workers from his state will have to take permission first.
Since the lockdown started in March, people have returned to Uttar Pradesh by train, buses or illegally by
trucks, many by walking and some by personal auto rickshaws. Till now more than 20 lakh migrants have
returned to Uttar Pradesh from other states. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that any
state government which wants to employ migrant workers from his state will have to take permission first. He
did not explain how the UP government planned to give permission or how it would check the movement of
lakhs of migrant workers after the lockdown. Yogi Adityanath said that his government would form a migrants'
commission. In an online interview, he said, "I have instructed my officers to make a commission for the
migrants and help them to get employment within Uttar Pradesh itself.”
He added "Some other states will not be able to take these workers from here without our permission because
they were not treated well in some of the states. We will give them insurance and all benefits. The lockdown is
slowly being erased. Some states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were trying to stop the migrants from going
to their home states as these workers would be required when the construction and factories restart. The
factories were not able to pay the salaries of the workers but the governments of these states were keeping
the workers comfortable so that they did not go away. Yogi Adityanath said that the Commission will provide
migrant workers with all kinds of facilities. Uttar Pradesh till now has more than 6,200 corona positive cases.
The numbers started rising after the migrant workers started returning in huge numbers.
The Chief Minister also claimed, "We are aware that migrant workers will bring the infection. But the workers
have ways to fight the infection. A normal person is taking 14 - 20 days to get cured, but the migrant workers
are getting corona negative only after seven or eight days.” Migrant workers, who returned to UP as
coronavirus positives, are recovering faster than the other patients in the state. This is a big strength.” There
is no data and proof to prove this claim.
