74% of Mumbai's Restaurants Have Dirty Kitchens

The FDA inspects 500 restaurants in Mumbai, with shocking results.

The Food and Drug Administration’s inspection of 500 restaurants revealed that,more than 74% of the restaurants have not followed the food safety regulations.They inspected the kitchens of some very famous restaurants. A famous cafe in Kala Ghoda,a chain of Mughlai restaurants and a very famous chain of vegetarian restaurants and many others were given improvement notices by the FDA.

One year ago 240 food safety officers were told to make a list 20 best restaurants in their zone. The results were very shocking.Pallavi Darade the FDA commissioner said that, The officers found health and hygiene problems in most of the restaurants. Restaurants which families have been going for years have very dirty kitchens.She said just because a restaurant looks expensive does not mean  they have clean kitchens.

A FDA official said that many restaurants do not clean their Kitchen regularly. They have not renovated the kitchen for long time. They do not have clean bathrooms for the staff. This is a problem as the staff may not wash their hands before cooking food.

The FDA joint commissioner said that, many restaurants have started to make changes. If the restaurants do not follow the food safety rules, their license can be suspended or cancelled.

The FDA has said that the consumers must choose restaurants smartly. They have even advised the consumers to check the kitchens.

The FDA has aimed to inspect 4000 restaurants all over Maharashtra.
